"Courage, resist, do not think you are alone! You are only the first": Italian Writers in Support of Ukraine

Writers from all over the world are in solidarity with Ukraine. Their voice is another humanitarian "heavy artillery" during this war. Thanks to PEN Ukraine's initiative, we continue to collect messages of support from writers from different countries. PEN has already published statements from American and Indian authors. This time we have words of support from Italian writers. Let the words inspire, heal, and keep defence. Together, we will win.

Nino Palumbo Junior, writer and lawyer:

"I have always believed with John F. Kennedy that humanity must end wars before a war ends humanity.
All our lives we Europeans thought — we deluded ourselves — that we could argue, we could also fight on the streets between factions, but never take up arms against each other, and that those who did it were out of history, out of our history.
Now Putin has ignored every pacifist ideal of ours, every custom of modern international law, (and Cicero said that laws in wartime are silent), and confronts us with the concept — very dear to us Italians, very familiar — of RESISTANCE. And then the words of Alexander the Great come to mind: I am not afraid of an army of lions led by sheep; I fear an army of sheep led by a lion.
And then Putin must really fear an army of Ukrainian citizens, warriors of strong soul, led by a Leader with many flaws, but as brave as a lion. Courage, resist, do not think you are alone! You are only the first."

Per tutta la nostra vita noi europei abbiamo pensato — ci siamo illusi — che si potesse litigare, ci si potesse anche affrontare per le strade tra fazioni, ma mai prendere le armi gli uni contro gli altri, e che chi lo faceva era fuori dalla storia, fuori dalla nostra Storia.
Ora Putin ha ignorato ogni nostro ideale pacifista, ogni consuetudine del moderno diritto internazionale, (e Cicerone diceva che le leggi in tempo di guerra sono silenziose), e ci pone di fronte al concetto — a noi italiani molto caro, molto famigliare — di RESISTENZA. Ed allora mi vengono alla mente le parole di Alessandro Magno: non temo un esercito di leoni guidato da pecore; temo un esercito di pecore guidato da un leone. Ed allora Putin deve davvero temere un esercito di cittadini Ucraini, guerrieri d’animo forte, guidati da un Leader con molti difetti, ma coraggioso come un leone.
Coraggio, resistete, non crediate di essere soli ! Siete solo i primi."

to news of the siege of Kyiv
a million refugees on the road

in what was once a home
