Words and Bullets

Words and Bullets

"Words and Bullets" is a special project about Ukrainian writers and journalists who joined the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or became volunteers after the start of the full-scale Russian invasion.

Years: 2022-2024

The project is implemented by the Chytomo cultural and publishing media and PEN Ukraine with the support of the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).

Project description

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, hundreds of Ukrainian writers and journalists have enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine or been engaged in active volunteering work for supplying the army. Those who used to change the world with their texts had to stand up to defend their country.

Words and Bullets is a series of conversations with the people who had been developing Ukrainian literary process and journalism for years but turned from narrators into protagonists of stories – those who protects our present and makes our future possible.

In 2024, Vivat Publishing House prepared the eponymous book based on these conversations and compiled by Nataliia Korniienko. The publication was delayed due to Russian shelling of the Factor Druk printing house in Kharkiv: all the printed copies of the book had burnt.

The book includes 24 interviews with Artem Chapeye, Dmytro Krapyvenko, Halyna Kruk, Anatolii Dnistrovyi, Oleksii Sinchenko, Victoria Amelina, Andrii Lyubka, Bohdan Kolomiichuk, Valerii Puzik, Petro Yatsenko, Ihor Mitrov, Yaryna Chornohuz, Kateryna Mikhalitsyna, Yevheniia Podobna, Maksym Kryvtsov, Maksym Skubenko, Tetyana Ogarkova and Volodymyr Yermolenko, Pavlo Stekh, Serhii Shebelist, Pavlo Vyshebaba, Dmytro Lazutkin, Lesya Hanzha, Fedir Shandor, and Oleksandr Mykhed.
