Our mission

The mission of PEN Ukraine:

To foster the continuity of the literary process, nourish the ecosystem of Ukrainian culture, support and develop the culture of memory and dialogue, and promote the development of professional cultural ties based on solidarity and mutual recognition.

We implement our mission through the management of cultural and human rights projects, namely:

• by introducing interdisciplinary initiatives
• by creating platforms for discussions
• by establishing networks of partnership ties
• by highlighting valuable current topics and processes
• by informing the international community about the cultural and intellectual life of Ukraine in times of war
• by documenting crimes against Ukrainian culture and media

Since 2022, after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the organization has focused on several main vectors of its work:

1. Informing the international audience about Russia's war against Ukraine
2. Documenting Russia's crimes against Ukrainian media and culture
3. Preserving the memory of deceased journalists and cultural figures
4. Speaking out and recording the experiences that Ukrainians are experiencing today
5. Restoring cultural life in Ukraine
6. Supporting Ukrainian libraries damaged by Russia
