Regional Meeting of PEN Centers
Years: 2014-....
Coordinators: Tetyana Teren, Maksym Sytnikov, Alisa Bondarenko
Partners: PEN International, New Democracy Fund
Launched in 2014 as an annual meeting of PEN Centers from the Central and Eastern Europe, this event constitutes a safe venue for mutual support and a platform to discuss challenges for the freedom of speech and human rights in the region.
Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine, the Meeting is subjected to expressing the international PEN community’s solidarity with Ukraine.
During their visit to Ukraine, the participants meet representatives of human rights and cultural organizations and visit the localities of Kyiv and Chernihiv regions where they saw firsthand the consequences of the Russian army’s aggression during the occupation in 2022.
To express their solidarity with Ukraine, the representatives of six PEN Centres came to Uzhhorod within the VI Regional Meeting in 2022: Tomica Bajsić (president of PEN Croatia), Kätlin Kaldmaa (president of PEN Estonia), Inga Gaile (president of PEN Latvia), Marek Radziwon (president of PEN Poland), Taciana Niadbaj (president of PEN Belarus in exile), and Hanna Nordell (director of PEN Sweden).
The pool of participants of the VII Regional Meeting in 2024 included Peter Mickwitz (PEN Finland), Per Christian Øhrgaard (PEN Denmark), Ann-Magrit Austenå (PEN Norway), Faruk Sehic (PEN Bosnia and Herzegovina), Henrik Sjöberg (PEN Sweden), Sophie Sumburane (PEN Berlin), and Stefan Todorovic (PEN Montenegro).
The pool of participants of the VIII Regional Meeting in 2024 included Carles Torner (PEN Catalan), Khatuna Tskhadadze (PEN Georgia), Carole Mesrobian (PEN France), and Froukje Santing (PEN Netherlands).
