Russian occupation authorities illegally imprisoned Nariman Celal in 2021

Ten Ukrainian citizens have been released from Russian captivity. This was reported on June 28 by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyi.

The list of the released persons includes Nariman Celal, deputy chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, civilians Olena Pekh and Valerii Matiushenko, whose stories PEN Ukraine had often told within public events in support of Ukrainian hostages of the Kremlin, priests Bohdan Heleta and Ivan Levytskyi, and civilians Mykola Shvets, Nataliia Zakharenko, Pavlo Kupriienko, Liudmyla Honcharenko and Kateryna Briukhanova.

You can read the story of Nariman Celal in Olesya Yaremchuk’s essay written for the joint project of PEN Ukraine and The Ukrainians titled The Free Voices of Crimea and follow the link to learn more details about Nariman Celal’s case.

As of today, 15 civic journalists from Crimea remain illegally imprisoned by Russian occupation authorities.
