George Gongadze memorial event 2023

On September 16, the George Gongadze and all the murdered Ukrainian journalists’ memorial event, dedicated to the 23rd anniversary of Gongadze’s murder, will take place in the Illinskyi park in Kyiv, at 11 am. The event is organized by the George Gongadze Prize in partnership with the Human Rights Centre ZMINA and the Institute of Mass Information.

On this day, the participants of the event, journalists and human rights activists, will:

  • remember George Gongadze’s contribution to the struggle against Russia’s centuries-long aggressive foreign policy;
  • remember Ukrainian and foreign journalists, killed by Russian army since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine;
  • tell about Russian occupation authorities’ crimes and harassment against civic journalists in the occupied Crimea and other temporarily non-government-controlled territories of Ukraine.

The opening of the photo exhibition The War Is Not Over Yet about Russia’s crimes against journalists and the media in Ukraine after February 24, 2022, will also take place during the event.

Participants of the event:

  • Myroslava Barchuk – journalist, TV presenter, laureate of the George Gongadze Prize (2021)
  • Kateryna Diachuk – expert in the monitoring of the freedom of speech with the Institute of Mass Information, editor of the imi.org.ua website
  • Stas Kozliuk – journalist, photographer and fixer
  • Tetyana Pechonchyk – Board Chairwoman of the Human Rights Centre ZMINA
  • Tetyana Teren – executive director of PEN Ukraine
  • Mykhailo Tkach – investigative journalist, correspondent of the Ukrainska Pravda.

Moderator of the event:

Olha Snitsarchuk – journalist, TV presenter, host of the podcast Here-And-Now: Stories of journalists at the war.

The event will be streamed on the Facebook pages of the George Gongadze Prize, PEN Ukraine, Human Rights Centers ZMINA, Institute of Mass Information, Ukrainska Pravda, and Lviv Media Forum.

The George Gongadze Prize is an award and ecosystem of initiatives for independent journalists, established by PEN Ukraine in partnership with the Kyiv Mohyla Business School, Association of KMBS Alumni, and Ukrainska Pravda. The prize is awarded annually on May 21, the birthday of George Gongadze.

The laureates of the prize are: Bogdan Logvynenko (2023), Eugene Malolietka and Mstyslav Chernov in tandem (2022), Myroslava Barchuk (2021), Pavlo Kazarin (2020), Vakhtang Kipiani (2019).
