From Kulish to the Present-day: 100 Iconic Novels and Short Stories in Ukrainian

A joint special project of the Ukrainian PEN and the online magazine The Ukrainians. The list, organized by PEN members, is designed to promote Ukrainian literature and Ukrainian writers in Ukraine and around the world; show the completeness and diversity of Ukrainian great prose; to become a guide for publishers, librarians and cultural organizations, and to encourage young audiences to read great texts.

Project description

This special project was jointly implemented by PEN Ukraine and the online magazine The Ukrainians. The list, compiled by the PEN members, is designed to promote Ukrainian literature and Ukrainian writers in Ukraine and around the world; to show the completeness and diversity of Ukrainian great prose; to serve as a guide for publishers, librarians and cultural organizations; and to encourage young audiences to read great texts. The list includes works that enriched Ukrainian and world literature, displaying distinct authorial style, offering new ideas and meanings, works that influenced the development of the Ukrainian language and the formation of Ukraine.

The compilation of a long list and several stages of voting, in which all members of PEN Ukraine participated, took place in March–June 2020. In total, the long list consisted of 436 items.

The project was developed by an advisory expert group of literary critics which includes Tamara Hundorova, Mykola Riabchuk, Olia Hnatiuk, Eleonora Solovey, Iryna Starovoyt, Anatoliy Dnistrovyi, Oleksiy Sinchenko, Rostyslav Semkiv, Olena Haleta and Marko Robert Stech.
