Writer, playwright, screenwriter

Yulita Ran (her real name is Yuliia Taranenko) was born in 1977 in Kharkiv.

Writer, playwright, screenwriter, stage director, translator, curator of art projects, and cultural manager. Works for children, young adults and adults in spheres including documentary and post documentary theater, baby theater, inclusive and interactive theater, and theater pedagogy.

Academic formation:

  • 1995-2000: Kharkiv National Yaroslav Mudryi University of Law (not graduated)
  • 2002-2007: Kharkiv National Ivan Kotliarevskyi University of Arts (graduated cum laude as a stage director of drama theater)
  • 2009-2012 Kharkiv National Ivan Kotliarevskyi University of Arts (postgraduate internship)

Yulita Ran is the author of over 40 children’s and adult plays and dramatic performances such as ENDORPHINES, A River Under a River, Peter Pan Syndrome, A Snowflake’s Journey, On the Wave, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum, The Sun and the Wind, The Three Little Foxes, Snowburgh, The Winter Tale, The Magic Star, The St. Mykolay’s Miracles, The Christmas Eve, Romeo. Juliet. A Classic Comedy, Women and Numbers, The Adventures of Gamers, A Lullaby for the Planet, Casting, Notwithstanding, Two Sketches on War, A Stork’s Luck, Fairies and Christmas Miracle, The Green Circle (libretto of the opera, music by Dmytro Malyi) etc.

As a playwright and/or stage director, she cooperated with Dnipro Academic Drama and Comedy Theater Dramicon, Poltava Academic Regional Muppet Theater, Chernivtsi Academic Regional Muppet Theater, Kharkiv Children’s and Young Adults’ Theater, Independent Theater Studio Arabesky (Kharkiv), the Platform for Theater Initiatives (Kharkiv), Folk Children’s Theater Kalambur (Kharkiv), Exemplary Choreographic Ensemble Rosynka (Kharkiv), Children’s Theater Balahanchyk (Turina, Italy), Kharkiv Regional Philharmonic, Kharkiv City Palace for Children and Young Adults, Kharkiv Literary Museum, Creative Space I.Hra, Independent Theater Sol (Kharkiv), Living Muppet Theater (Lutsk), Khmelnytskyi Muppet Theater etc.

Author of over 30 children’s books.

Yulita Ran collaborates with publishing houses such as Ranok, Chytarium, ASSA, VIVAT, GEORGE etc. She translates from Polish language and works as a copy editor.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, she has been actively involved in humanitarian volunteer activities to meet the needs of military servicepeople and civilians.

2022-2023 — chief stage director of Poltava Academic Regional Muppet Theater.

2019-2020, 2020-2021, 2022-2023 — expert of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation (branches such as Inclusion, Culture Under Crisis: Institutional Support, Culture and Regions).

2020, during the pandemic, — together with stage director Yanina Zelenska, Yulita Ran implemented the project Theater and Cildren (a series of online conversations with theater employees, psychologists, and teachers on children’s theater).

2019 — curator of the exhibition The Archive of Children’s Drawings of 1940-1970s within the Children’s Program of the II National Biennale of Young Art.

2012-2014 — chief stage director of the Green Magic Author’s Theater.

1995-2012 — journalist, screenwriter and presenter at various Kharkiv media.

2005-2011 — stage director, playwright, actor at Folk Children’s Theater Kalambur and Aarte Private Theater.

2010-2014 рр. — professor at Kharkiv National Ivan Kotliarevskyi University of Arts, the Stage Managing Department.
