Luchuk Taras

Literary critic, translator, poet

Poet, translator, and literary critic, was born in 1962 in Lviv, where he currently lives. In 1985, he graduated from the Ivan Franko Lviv University with a degree in Classical Languages and Literatures, and received his Ph.D. from the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature, National Academy of Arts and Sciences of Ukraine in 1990. He teaches World Literature and Creative Writing at the Ivan Franko National University of Lviv.

Taras Luchuk started writing poetry in the early 1980s. His poetry, translations, articles and reviews have appeared in numerous periodicals and almanacs, including Vsesvit, Svito-vyd, Suchasnist, and Korolivskyi Lis. He translates from Classical Greek, Latin, German, and Russian into Ukrainian and has published a collection of his poetry and translations Everyday but Today (2002). He presented the 2003 Solomea Pavlychko Memorial Lecture entitled Catullus Versus Sappho: Translation Beyond the Context of Gender Linguistics which was published as a book in 2005. He has received a number of fellowships, including the Grant from Polish Academic Foundation (Kasa im. Jósefa Mianowskiego, Warsaw University, Poland, 2003), the Fulbright Senior Scholar Fellowship (The University of Massachusetts Boston, USA, 2006), and the Grant from Österreichischer Austauschdienst (Vienna University, Austria, 2016).

Taras Luchuk is a member of the Association of Ukrainian Writers, and a member of Shevchenko Scientific Society. He participated in several international poetry festivals, including the Yara Arts Group Poetry Festival in New York (USA, 1999), the Literary Readings Festival in Vilenica (Slovenia, 2003), and the 45th Belgrade International Meeting of Writers (Serbia, 2008). His poetry has been translated into English, Armenian, Slovenian, and Serbian.
