Hrymych Maryna

Anthropologist, ethnologist, folklorist, professor

Ukrainian writer and novelist, Maryna was born on 4 April 1961 in the city of Kyiv, the Ukrainian SSR. She is an anthropologist, ethnologist (Doctor of History), folklorist (Candidate of Philology), professor, publisher (Director of Duliby Publishing House), and manager of cultural projects.

Maryna Hrymych started her literary career being a student as a translator from Slavic languages.

For a long time she was exclusively engaged in academia in various spheres (folklore studies, methodology of teaching the Ukrainian language as foreign, ethnology, history, anthropology). She is the author of several monographs. Moreover, she is a manager, compiler and academic editor of big projects, collective academic monographs and academic collections.

In fiction since 2000s she has worked in belles-lettres as well as in solemn intellectual novelism. Individual works were published under the pseudonym Liuba Klymenko. Her novel Frida was staged in the Berdychiv Music and Drama Theatre (2019). Her novel A Decent Lady of Lviv was adapted to a film under the same title (2018). Works of Maryna Hrymych have been translated into French, English, Polish, Czech, and Arabic.

As a manager of cultural projects, she coordinates Ukrainian programs on international book fairs in Beirut (2017–2018), Abu-Dhabi (2018); curator of the Beirut Courtyard on the Book Arsenal (2017–2019). She manages Arabic translation projects and publishing of Ukrainian works (Ahatanhel Krymsky, Ivan Franko, The History of Ukraine, etc.).
