Babina Natalia
Natalia Babina (Dynko) was born on May 15, 1966, in the Ukrainian-speaking village of Zakazanka (Belarus, Brest region, Brest district) at the border with three countries: Poland, Ukraine and Belarus.
She worked as an engineer at plants and as a technician co-worker at newspapers’ editorial offices.
For 20 years she has collaborated as a journalist with one of the oldest Belarusian independent newspapers Nasha Niva. In addition, she has been published in a range of Belarusian and Ukrainian periodicals (Arkhe and Dziejaslou magazines (Belarus), newspapers such as Post-Postup (Ukraine), Zviazda (Belarus), and others).
Babina’s novel Down Among the Fishes was shortlisted for the prestigious Angelus European Literature Award (2011, Poland).
Since 2014, she has chaired the Ukrainian Literature Society at the Union of Belarusian Writers and edited Sprava, a Belarusian-Ukrainian almanac.
Natalia Babina is a member of PEN Belarus and the Union of Belarusian Writers.
She taught at the School of the Young Writer which is a part of the Union of Belarusian Writers.
Babina was the screenwriter of the children’s animation program Pryhody i Pakhody at the Belsat TV channel.
Natalia is married and has three children.
Bibliography
Author of three books: the short stories collection The Blood Should Not Be Seen (2007), the novel Down Among the Fishes (2008, 2011) (in Ukrainian translation it's titled Rybhorod), and the Ukrainian-written novel Bodai Budka (2019) simultaneously published in Belarus (Smeltok Publishing House) and Ukraine (Folio Publishing House). Her works have been translated into English, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish, Czech, Slovak, and Hungarian languages.
Distinctions
Natalia is the winner of the Cherkasova Prize of Belarusian Association of Journalists (2010) and Vasyl Dmytriuk Berest Literary Prize (2020).
She was awarded the anniversary 25 Years of Independence of Ukraine medal.
