Kazarin Volodymyr

Ukrainian literary critic, literary critic, public figure

Born on 15 August 1952 in Ashhabat City of the Turkmen SSR. Since 1964 he lives in Ukraine, first in Mykolaiv, then in Odesa. In 1967 he moved to Crimea, where in 1969 he finished school (with studying of Ukrainian language and literature) in Feodosia.

In 1969–1974, he studied at the Far Eastern Federal University (Department of Philology) in Vladivostok.

In 1974–1978, he did PhD in the A.A. Zhdanov Leningrad State University (now in St Petersburgh) and defended a PhD dissertation on "Evolution of N.V. Gogol’s Historical Prose: (Up to the history of creation of a novel "Taras Bulba")." Supervisor: Prof. G.P. Makogonenko.

In 1988, he defended a doctor dissertation on "Problems of Art Techniques of Russian Literature in the 30s of the XIX century: (Pushkin, Lermontov, Gogol)" at the Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of NASU, the specialized academic council of the NASU corresponding member N.Y. Krutikova.

Since 1981, he has worked at the V.I. Vernadsky Taurida National University (head of the department, vice-chancellor). Since 2014, Volodymyr has been active in the Crimean protest movement against Russian occupation. He was the one to raise a question to the Ministry of Education and Science on transfer of the Taurida University to free mainland of Ukraine. In 2015, Ministry of Education and Science adopted President Petro Poroshenko’s decision on transfer of the educational institution to Kyiv. In November of the same year, Kazarin was appointed chancellor of the university. Nowadays the Taurida University comprising 5,000 persons is successfully developing and opening new specializations.

He authored over 3,000 publications (monographs, education and methodic handbooks, literary collections, articles, interviews), edited and compiled over 300 magazine issues, collective monographs, collections of academic works, and other editions, as well as organized numerous symposiums and conferences, setting up monuments and memorials, establishment of museums and museum expositions, revival of a number of warrior and family necropolises.

He is published in various editions throughout Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Georgia, Israel, Italy, Canada, Poland, USA, Turkey, Czech Republic, Switzerland, and Sweden in dozens of languages.
