Karpa Irena

Ukrainian writer, journalist

Born on 8 December 1980 in Cherkasy, Irena is a Ukrainian writer, journalist, lead singer of the alternative band QARPA (former "Actually Alone").

In 1984, with parents she moved to Yaremcha of the Ivano-Frankivsk region. In 1998, she goes to the Kyiv National Linguistic University, Department of the French Language, gets a Master’s degree. Then, she sets out to Indonesia, Yogyakarta, and collaborates with international nongovernmental human rights organizations (especially women’s rights), and reads free lectures in the local university.

In 2004, Irena returns to Kyiv. In 2005–2013, she collaborates as an author and host with various TV channels: ICTV, Inter ("First Expedition: book rubric"), Novyi, MTV; cultural and social direction.

Together with the band "Actually Alone", she performs on stage of the 2004 Maidan, organizes socially active youth around her webpage.

She takes active part in political protests: against the law on the languages, on protection nof public morality, etc.

She participates in a number of international conferences, book forums and literary scholarships.

As a musician, writer and political activist, Irena takes active part in events of the Revolution of Dignity. She collaborates with a range of foreign media for the most impartial coverage of the Maidan events.

With the beginning of the Donbas occupation, Irena writes a script, consults artists and dubs a minimalist animation film "Vatnik". 12 satirical episodes evoke heated debate and gain hundred thousand views on the Internet.

In 2014, the government of the self-proclaimed "LPR" put her on the hit list for incisive caricature of the so-called LPR’s Minister of Culture.

At the outbreak of the war, Karpa actively engages in volunteering activities: financial aid (sells her car, purchases military equipment); addresses soldiers and active circles in the liberated territories.

Since December 2015, Karpa is the First Secretary for Culture at the Embassy of Ukraine in France. Achievements in cultural diplomacy: multidisciplinary festival "Week-end à l’Est" with the invited city Kyiv; Ukraine’s participation in Salon du Livre, international photography biennale Circulation, international festival of animation films and creative technology Mifa Market, exhibition "A l’Est, la Guerre sans fin?" in the Museum of Army (Invalides) in Paris; promoting Ukrainian designers in Paris fashion week, Paris Design Week, Maison et Objets; assisting translations of Ukrainian authors into French, etc.

She contributes to various actions supporting Oleg Sentsov: at the 2018 Paris Salon du Livre (Paris Book Fair), she gives President Macron a book of stories by Oleg Sentsov in French translation.

Currently, Karpa’s new novel has been submitted for printing; she is working on a scripto of biopic about S. Yablonska.
