Born on January 2, 1963, in Ternopil. Prose writer, journalist, columnist, scholar, playwright.

Graduated from Lviv Ivan Franko National University (1985), Faculty of Journalism.

In 1985-1990, he was working as a pressman in the Odessa region and in Odessa, and since 1990 — in Ternopil.

In 1995, Oleksandr Vilchynsky joined the National Writers' Union of Ukraine, and in 2002 — the Association of Ukrainian Writers. Fellow of Gaude Polonia – 2005 (Poland), Hawthornden Castle – 2016 (the UK). Since 2006, he has been working as a professor at the Journalism Department of the Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University. In 2012, he defended his PhD thesis titled "The Press of the Ternopil Region in 1985-1991: Structural and Content-Related Aspect" at the Institute of Journalism of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv; Candidate of Sciences in the field of social communications.

Published several books and dozens of articles in Ukrainian press and in collections of scholarly articles. Along with the literary themes, he is also actively engaged in the research of Ukrainian media landscape, problems of national identity and civil society formation.
