Karpiuk Vasyl

Writer, poet, essayist, children’s author and publisher

Vasyl Karpiuk was born in 1988 in the village of Brustury (Kosiv district of the Ivano-Frankivsk region).

He graduated from Ciscarpathia National Vasyl Stefanyk University (Ivano-Frankivsk). Yet during his studies, he worked on a local radio station and was actively involved in the city’s cultural life.

He started writing poetry at 11 years old and prose at 16. In 2009, his works were distinguished by literary awards such as Smoloskyp and International Ukrainian German Oles Honchar Prize.

His first book was published in 2010. Since then, Karpiuk has published a few poetry collections, an essay book and a poetry book for children. His books were shortlisted for and distinguished by various literary prizes.

Karpiuk relates to the idea of discovering Ukrainian culture and traditions via children’s and fantasy literature.

He is also a co-founder and CEO of the Discursus Publishing House (over 10 years of activity and hundreds of books printed out). As of now, the company is being rebranded as Brustury Publishing House to highlight its focus on the Hutsul topics, Ukrainian ethnography, and local identity.

As a publisher, Karpiuk returns forgotten names of Hutsul writers into Ukrainian literature, discovers new names of Carpathian authors and forms a unique niche to reflect the Hutsul people’s identity. His aim is to make Hutsul mythology and folklore recognizable worldwide.

In 2025, Karpiuk enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and he is involved in creating a military media and developing projects of the Book to the Frontline initiative via the Cultural Forces Platform.
