Born on March 2, 1977, Marlen (Suleyman) Asanov is a Crimean Tatar and father of four. He graduated from the university as a Crimean Tatar and Turkish philologist. He had worked as a teacher of Crimean Tatar language, then became a civic journalist and volunteer of the Crimean Solidarity.
After his arrest, Asanov was nominated for the Volunteer Prize 2017. He has been imprisoned under the article 205.5, chapter 1 of the Russian Federation’s Criminal Code ("Providing the activity of an organization recognized as terroristic in the accordance with the legislation of the Russian Federation") and sentenced to 19 years behind the bars. He is now held in the penal colony №7 in the village of Sosnovka, Mordovia Republic, Russian Federation.
"Today many people face persecutions in Crimea. The authorities attempt to present it as the ‘war on terrorism.’ But they should know that lie is doomed to downfall. Crimean Tatars and the international community will not believe these spurious accusations," Suleyman Asanov, 2 August 2018.
