Project description

It is a PEN Ukraine and The Ukrainians online magazine special project. The first literary TOP 100 seeking to tell Ukrainians and the world about the essential works of literature written in the Ukrainian language was created by members of the Ukrainian center of PEN International.

"The list contains works which enriched Ukrainian and world literature; characterized by specific author’s style they suggested new ideas and senses and influenced the development of Ukrainian language and the formation of Ukraine," such is the main criterion creators of the list had in mind. Moreover, it comprises works entirely in Ukrainian language written in XVIII–ХХІ centuries, representing poetry, prose, playwriting, essayism and memoirs, but excluding academic editions. Another significant detail: each author in this TOP 100 is manifested by one work only.

This project seeks to show abundance and genre variety of Ukrainian literature; draw attention of Ukrainian and international readership to significant works which due to certain reasons were forgotten or little known; guide publishers, librarians and cultural managers to the works which have to be republished, reconsidered and be available in holdings among Ukraine’s libraries; motivate Ukrainian media to write and talk more about Ukrainian literature.
