Portnov Andrii

Historian, essayist, editor, translator

Born in May, 17 1979 in Dnipro. Graduated from the historical department of Dnipro National University and the Studium Europy Wschodniej at the Warsaw University.

In 2005 defended a PhD thesis at the Ivan Krypiakevych Institute for Ukrainian Studies, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Lviv.

In 2007–2010 edited the journal “Ukraїna Moderna”.

In 2012 founded (together with Volodymyr Masliychuk) an intellectual web-portal historians.in.ua (http://www.historians.in.ua/index.php/en/) and was its co-editor until August 2017.

In 2012–2014 Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study (WIKO) Berlin. In 2014–2015 Alexander von Humboldt Fellow. Starting from 2012 lectured at the Humboldt University Berlin, Free University of Berlin, Basel University, Free University of Brussels, SciencesPo Paris and SciencesPo Lyon. In 2017 Fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna. In 2016–2017 Research Fellow at the University of Geneva.

In 2015 initiated the establishment of the Berlin-Brandenburg Ukraine Initiative transformed in 2016 into the PRISMA UKRAЇNA Research Network Eastern Europe (http://www.prisma-ukraina.de/home.html).

In Spring 2018 appointed a Professor of Entangled History of Ukraine at the European University Viadrina (Frankfurt/Oder).

The author of five books and ca. 200 scholarly articles published in Ukrainian, English, Polish, German, French, Russian, Belarusian, Czech, Bulgarian, Hungarian, Lithuanian, Japanese.

His PhD book “Scholarship in Exile” (2008) was awarded Jerzy Giedroyc Prize. His essays` collection “Histories for Home Use” (2013) received Yuri Shevelov Prize and was named “A Book of 2014” in the section “Ukrainian Humanities”.
