Haleta Olena

Literary critic, culturologist, poet, translator

Professor of Literary Theory and Comparative Literature at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Professor of Cultural Studies at Ukrainian Catholic University. She has researched, taught and presented modern and contemporary Ukrainian literature at universities and academic institutions in more than twenty countries, including the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, Japan, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic, and others.

Director (2004-2010) and senior research fellow (2001-2012) of the Center for the Humanities at Lviv University, organizer of public projects aimed at establishing open dialogue in Ukraine and in the international academic and cultural community, such as "Lectures in memoriam of Solomia Pavlychko", "University Dialogues", "Intellectual Biography", "Open Access", "Agent 034".

She has worked as a co-organizer of international projects dedicated to the intellectual history of the twentieth century and the role of art and literature in crisis situations (in cooperation with Humboldt University of Berlin and Heidelberg Academy of Science and Humanities), and as a member of the steering committee of the Prisma Ukraina (Berlin) International Academies for the study of cultural processes in Central and Eastern Europe.

Olena is the author of two poetry collections and of the monograph "From Anthology To Ontology: anthology as a means of representation of Ukrainian literature of the late nineteenth – the early twenty-first centuries". She has been awarded the Lviv Book Forum Prize, the Litaccent Prize, and the Book of the Year Prize from National Writers’ Union of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and National Museum of Literature of Ukraine.

She serves as a member of the Board of the Ukrainian Fulbright Circle, the Program Board of the Lviv Book Forum, the Jury for the transnational literary prize UNESCO’s City of Literature based in Lviv and is an expert of translation projects of the Ukrainian Book Institute.
