Letter of support for Ukrainian Colleagues from Latvian writers, translators, publicists and Latvian Writers Union

Dear colleagues and friends in Ukraine,

We, Latvian writers, express deep concern about the situation in Ukraine, since the authorities are using brutal force and firearms against the protesters. We, as well as our government, strongly condemn the acts of violence in Kyiv. We also hope that the European governments will be able to unite to provide real, not only moral, help for Ukrainian people in these days of instability and terror.

We express our sympathy and solidarity with those who have lost their loved ones and those, who are risking their lives, freedom and health each day in the streets of Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities. We feel deep respect for the Ukrainian people, their faith in freedom and human rights – it also reminds us of January, 1991, when people were in front of a similar challenge and faced armoured troops in the streets of Riga.

Dear friends and colleagues, you are all so incredibly strong and determined to defend the main values of the European society. We do believe that the current events are essential steps towards free speech and democracy in Ukraine; it is a pity to see, though, that these steps are being taken for such a high price – a price of human lives.

We are following the news from Ukraine and spreading information from the EuroMaidan channels and the personal evidences of our Ukrainian friends and colleagues, and we will keep up with the information, and with translating and sharing it, till the resolution of the situation in Ukraine.

Sincerely –
Latvian writers, translators, publicists
and Latvian Writers Union.
